Black Walnut

FEATURES:

Known as the Black Walnut, this large stately tree with a short trunk and broad crown will grow to a height of 30 metres. The bark is grey-black and deeply furrowed. It has aromatic, large, glossy green foliage and edible nuts.

FLOWERS:

Male flowers in drooping catkins, female flowers in clusters of 2 to 5, ripening during Autumn into a nut with a brownish-green, semi-fleshy husk and a brown corrugated nut.

COMMENTS:

Produces a substance that can be toxic to horses (but not cattle) and other plants. The wood of the Black Walnut is highly valued for its use in the timber industry.

TREE CARE:

Plant in a well drained and well worked soil. Take care to plant the bud union above the soil level. Water in well and keep soil moist until tree is established. Fertilize when planting and again after new growth appears. Prune tree when planting to encourage new growth.
